July is Disability Pride Month!

Every July, we celebrate Disability Pride Month, a time to recognize the achievements, identities, history, and contributions of people with disabilities while advocating for a more accessible and inclusive society.

Disability Pride Month also commemorates the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), signed into law on July 26, 1990. The ADA remains a landmark civil rights law that protects the rights of people with disabilities and promotes equal opportunity, accessibility, and full participation in all aspects of community life.

This year’s theme, “The World Works Better With Us,” highlights a simple but powerful truth: when people with disabilities are included, respected, and empowered, everyone benefits. Innovations inspired by accessibility—such as curb cuts, closed captioning, voice dictation, and universal design—make communities more accessible for all.

More than one billion people worldwide and approximately one in four adults in the United States live with a disability. Yet disability is often misunderstood, stigmatized, or viewed only through a medical lens. Disability Pride Month encourages us to recognize disability as a natural and valuable part of human diversity—not something to be “fixed,” but an identity and lived experience that deserves respect, representation, and equal opportunity.

For organizations like the Ohio Statewide Independent Living Council (Ohio SILC) and Ohio’s Centers for Independent Living, Disability Pride Month is a reminder of our ongoing commitment to advancing independent living, self-determination, accessibility, and inclusion. Guided by the Independent Living philosophy, we believe every person should have the opportunity to make their own choices, live independently, and participate fully in their communities.

This July, celebrate Disability Pride by:

  • Listening to disabled voices and lived experiences.
  • Promoting accessibility in your workplace, school, and community.
  • Challenging stereotypes and removing barriers to inclusion.
  • Supporting disability-led organizations and advocacy efforts.
  • Recognizing disability as an essential part of human diversity.

Together, we can help build a future where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
