Centers for Independent Living (CILs)
In Ohio, there are 12 Centers for Independent Living. These centers help Ohio residents with disabilities by offering different programs and services. They aim to help people with disabilities live more independently in the community they choose.
CILs provide the following services to individuals:
- Advocacy: Supporting the interests of an individual(s) with disabilities
- Information and Referral: Giving information and guidance
- Peer Support: People who have been through similar experiences help each other
- Skills Training: Learning new skills
- Nursing home and institution transition to the community: Moving from a nursing home or institution to living in the community
- Youth Transition: Helping young people move on to adult life
- Diversion (moving away) from nursing home or institution
Many centers offer extra services to help people reach their goals for living more independently in their community.
Centers also work with others in the community to make it easier for people with disabilities to access places and be included.
Centers help people of all ages who have any kind of disability.
Most of the people on the board and the staff have disabilities themselves.
